HIFU facial is one of the most sought-after non-surgical lifting treatments, and for good reason: it works in the deep layer that supports the face, with no cuts, no general anaesthetic and an almost immediate return to your routine. This guide explains how it works, what to expect and how to know if it is right for you.
What is HIFU facial?
HIFU stands for High Intensity Focused Ultrasound. The device delivers energy concentrated at very precise points beneath the skin, at the depth of the SMAS (the muscular-fibrous layer that holds the facial tissues and that a surgeon tightens in a surgical facelift). This controlled heat contracts the tissue immediately and stimulates new collagen and elastin over the following weeks.
At our clinic we use SMAS lifting with Ultraformer III, an evolution of classic HIFU technology designed to be more precise and more comfortable.
What is HIFU facial used for?
- Firming the facial oval and defining the jawline.
- Improving sagging cheeks and jowls.
- Slightly lifting the brows and upper eyelid.
- Tightening the skin of the neck and under the chin.
- Improving overall skin quality for a firmer, more luminous look.
What is a session like?
- Assessment: the doctor evaluates your skin, the degree of laxity and your expectations. If HIFU is not the best option, we will tell you.
- Preparation: skin cleansing and conductive gel.
- Treatment: the handpiece glides over the agreed areas. You feel warmth and small pulses; sensitivity varies by person and area.
- Afterwards: you can carry on with your day. Mild redness or tenderness for a few hours or days is normal.
A session usually lasts between 45 and 90 minutes depending on the areas treated.
When do you see results?
Some people notice a little tightening in the following days, but the full effect builds gradually, usually over 2 to 3 months, as collagen regenerates. Results last for months and vary with age, lifestyle and genetics. In many cases a maintenance session is recommended after a while. The doctor will set out a plan for your case.
HIFU facial compared with other non-surgical lifting options
| Treatment | Depth of action | Ideal for | Downtime |
|---|---|---|---|
| HIFU / Ultraformer III | Deep (SMAS) | Moderate laxity, facial oval, neck | Practically none |
| Facial radiofrequency | Medium (dermis) | Firmness, texture, mild laxity | None or minimal |
| Thread lift | Deep dermis / hypodermis | Repositioning tissue | A few days |
| Surgical facelift | Surgical | Severe laxity | Weeks |
Many patients combine HIFU with radiofrequency or biostimulation to work at several depths. See all options on our facial rejuvenation page.
Who is it for, and who should ask first?
Good candidates: people with mild to moderate laxity, usually from around 30–35, who want a natural result without an operating theatre.
Talk to the doctor first if you have: pregnancy or breastfeeding, a pacemaker or other electronic implants, infections or lesions in the area, certain skin or clotting conditions. That is why every session starts with a medical assessment.
Common myths about HIFU facial
“It is the same as radiofrequency”
No. Radiofrequency mainly heats the dermis; HIFU goes deeper, to the SMAS, with focused points of energy. The tightening effect is different, which is why the two are often combined.
“It works for any degree of laxity”
No. It works best for mild to moderate laxity. When there is a lot of excess skin, surgery may be the more realistic option, and we will tell you honestly at the consultation.
“You see the result the same day”
You may feel slight tightness, but the real result builds over weeks with new collagen. Plan ahead of an important event: ideally 2–3 months before.
How to prepare and care for your skin afterwards
- Before: arrive with clean skin, no make-up, and mention any recent treatment (peels, laser, fillers).
- First days: gentle moisturising, no harsh exfoliants or intense heat (sauna, very intense exercise) for the first 24–48 hours.
- Always: daily sun protection. Here on the Costa Blanca it is the best ally for lasting results.
- Long term: a routine with antioxidants, retinoids (if your doctor advises) and good hydration maintains skin quality.
What affects the result?
Two people treated with the same device can get different results. Age and starting collagen quality, degree of laxity, weight and weight changes, smoking, accumulated sun exposure and above all the practitioner’s technique all play a part: choosing the right depth for each area and respecting facial safety maps. That is why we always do a medical assessment before proposing a plan.
A combined plan for natural rejuvenation
The face ages in several layers: bone, fat, muscle and skin. The best results usually come from a staged plan: HIFU to tighten the deep structure, radiofrequency or biostimulation to improve firmness and texture, and, if needed, targeted volume with hyaluronic acid. If you want a lifting effect in the upper face, ask us about the Nefertiti lift and our full face programme, where we design a tailored plan.
Frequently asked questions
Does HIFU facial hurt?
You feel warmth and small, brief pulses. The intensity is adjusted to each area and to your tolerance; most patients describe it as uncomfortable but manageable.
How many sessions do I need?
For many people one initial session is enough, followed by maintenance. The assessment determines the exact number.
Can I go back to work the same day?
Generally yes. There may be mild redness or sensitivity that fades quickly.
How long do the results last?
It depends on your skin and lifestyle. Results usually last for months and can be reinforced with maintenance sessions.
HIFU or radiofrequency: which is better?
They are not rivals: they act at different depths. HIFU is stronger for tightening, while radiofrequency improves firmness and texture. At the consultation we recommend the right combination.
